Chile closed the first half of 2026 with about 4.9 million fixed internet connections, up 3.3% year on year. Of those, 87.3% are already fiber: fiber grew 20.7% in twelve months, according to statistics from the Undersecretariat of Telecommunications (Subtel). Subtel also highlights that Chile has the cheapest fixed internet in Latin America.

Usage keeps rising too: fixed traffic reached 37 exabytes between January and June, averaging more than 699 GB per household per month.

The remaining gap

70.36% of households nationwide have fixed internet, but the urban–rural divide is still large: 77.3% in urban areas versus only 25.5% in rural areas.

What it means for ISPs

A fiber-to-the-home network has, most of the time, more capacity than each customer uses. That spare capacity is already deployed and paid for. With community WiFi, an ISP can turn it into a public network on the street, isolated from the home network and without touching contracted bandwidth, and into a new revenue stream.

In a market with such competitive prices, letting customers take their internet beyond the home is also a differentiator.
